Redlands Unified School District: Board of Education proposes policy for automatic removal of challenged library books
Cases
Case Overview
In 2025, the Redlands Unified School District Board of Education in California proposed an amendment to its administrative regulations that would require immediate removal of library materials challenged on certain grounds, before the District could assess the merits of the challenge. The policy also did not set any standards for the District to use when evaluating complaints.
On June 24, ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø wrote the Board, explaining that the proposed amendment lacked procedural safeguards to prevent baseless challenges and protect against the unconstitutional removal of educationally suitable books for arbitrary or viewpoint-based reasons.
